News-Parrsboro Area Fisherman's Body Recovered, Another Missing -Jan 21st

An evening ATV expedition along the Minas Basin near Parrsboro has resulted in at least one death. Cumberland RCMP say two fishermen were reported missing at about 8 a.m. Saturday morning in Parrsboro.Const. Dal Hutchinson with the RCMP says the men set out on two ATVs hauling trailers at about 5 p.m. on Friday to check on lobster crates they had stored on the shore. He says by 1 a.m., the two had not returned and family members grew concerned.   Hutchinson says the body of one of the man was located this morning on the shoreline, while the other man, along with the two ATVs and trailers, are still missing.  Hutchinson noted that the Parrsboro area experiences the highest tides in the world and it was cold and slippery overnight.

News - Fire Ravages Sackville's Foundry - January 18th


Firefighters from two counties are on the scene of a major fire at the Enterprise Foundry in Sackville.

Nearby residents reported two explosions at around 7 pm Wednesday, in the part of the plant know as the “Old Moulding Shop” which was being used to store chemicals.

The explosions could be felt nearly a kilometre away.

The Sackville Fire Department is being assisted by other departments in Westmorland and Cumberland Counties.

They are being hampered by strong winds and cold temperatures.

There are no homes close to the facility, and there are no reports of any injuries. No shifts were scheduled this evening.

The foundry  is located on Lorne Street near the train station, and has been an employer in Sackville since 1852 producing cast iron cook stoves, furnaces and heaters.

According to the company’s website, it is one of the few remaining foundries in the world.

Sports - Ramblers Rebound - January 14th

The Amherst Ramblers rebounded in a big way Saturday night whalloping the Miramichi Timberwolves 8-1 at the Amherst Stadium.   Brandon Mac Lean led the Ramblers with a pair of goals while Brandon Street, Kody Orr, Trevor Layton, Mathieu Bourdreau, Jordon Escott and Maxime Richard had singles. 

Sports - Ramblers/Blues Suffer Losses - Jan 13th

The Campbellton Tigers tripped the Amherst Ramblers 5-2 Friday night in Maritime Junior Hockey League play in Campbellton.   Trevor Layton and Brandon Street scored for the Ramblers.   The Ramblers will try and rebound tonight when they host the Miramichi Timberwolves at the Amherst Stadium.  Gametime is 7:00 o’clock.

In Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League play, the Cumberland County Blues lost in a shootout last night to the Strait Pirates 5-4.

Sports -Ramblers Edge Lumberjacks (Jan 7)

The Amherst Ramblers edged the Bridgewater Lumberjacks  5-4 Saturday night at the Amherst Stadium.
Andrew Smith led the Ramblers with 2 goals while Ryan Matheson and Maxime Richard added 1 goal and 1 assist each. Cole MacMillan (game winner) scored at 17:14 for the win.  Richard Tingley stopped 34 of 38 shots for the win.

Sports ..Ramblers Start New Year With A Loss (Jan 5th)

The Amherst Ramblers have started the New Year on a losing note.  The Ramblers dropped a 4-2 loss to the Yarmouth Mariners at the Amherst Stadium last night.  The Ramblers are back on home ice Saturday night entertaining the Bridgewater Lumberjacks.  Gametime is 7:00 o'clock at the Amherst Stadium.

Well-known Police Officer Succumbs to Cancer (Dec 24th) 

A well-known veteran Amherst police officer has passed away after battling stomach cancer.  Constable Francis Smith died early Saturday morning in hospital in New Glasgow. He was 56.   Smith was the police department's Community Policing Officer and was involved in a number of youth projects in the community.  He was also the President of the Amherst Lions Club.   He was honoured in October by the province with the Minister's Award for Leadership in Crime Prevention.   He was a police officer for 33 years.   Constable Smith is survived by his wife Barb and two children.

The Amherst Ramblers edged the Weeks Crushers 5-4 in overtime Saturday night in Maritime Junior Hockey League action at the Amherst Stadium.  Jordan Escott had a goal and 2 assists to lead the Ramblers. Brandon Street scored twice for Amherst, including the overtime winner.  Amherst was 1 for 2 on the power play, while Weeks went 2 for 6. Richard Tingley went 26 for 30 to get the win in nets.

The Amherst Ramblers needed a shootout to beat the Truro Beardcats last night in Maritime Junior Hockey league action at the Amherst Stadium.   Jamie Bishop, Brandon Street and Andrew Smith scored in regulation time for the Ramblers.  The Ramblers are on the road tonight.  They travel to HRM to faced the Metro Marauders at 7:00.   Then the Ramblers are back on home ice Saturday night when they’ll entertain the Bridgewater Lumberjacks.  Gametime is 7:00 o’clock.

News ... YMCA Launches Capital Campaign ... Dec 6th

The Cumberland YMCA has officially launched a $700,000 capital campaign.   YMCA CEO Trina Clark says that represents the amount that needs to be raised as the public portion to go towards their recent 3.5 million dollar expansion and renovation program.   The multi-year project included the new wellness and early learning centres as the first two phases. The third phase, to be funded by the public campaign, includes a new roof over the pool, new pool mechanical and heating and ventilation systems and upgrades to the locker rooms and pool deck.   Clark says the first focus will be the roof.  She expects the project to be completed by the end of 2012 or early 2013. She hopes to have the fundraising campaign wrapped up by next summer. Former Cumberland Colchester Musquodoboit Valley MP Bill Casey is the honourary campaign chair while lawyer David McNairn and Cumberland North Academy principal Kathy McLean are the co-chairs.

News ... National Day of Remembrance Commemorated .. Dec 6th

Representatives of various local organizations placed roses on a Christmas tree during a celebration of Remembrance  today at the First Baptist Church in Amherst.     Residents gathered at noon to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada.

        Guest Speaker Pam Harrison told the gathering that women need to support women and they need to tell the story to their children and to men that violence is not acceptable.   The group lit candles and observed a moment of silence while a prayer was offered by Karen Dickenson. 

        The special day was established by Parliament in 1991 to mark the anniversary of the murders in 1989 by Marc Lepine of 14 young women at l’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal.     The women were studying engineering at the Montreal school.

The Woodstock Slammers doubled the Amherst Ramblers 6-3 Friday night in Woodstock. Andrew Smith led the Ramblers with 2 goals while Jamie Bishop had a single.  Matt Murphy stopped 21 of 24 shots for the win while Kody Blois stopped 49 of 55 shots in the loss.          The Ramblers are on home ice this evening hosting the Campbellton Tigers.  Gametime is 7:00 o’clock.

CFTA News ...New Hospital for Pugwash .. Dec 2nd

The province will build a new health care facility to replace the outdated North Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Pugwash.

It will house a collaborative emergency centre and provide better access to health care for patients and families.

Brian Skabar, MLA for Cumberland North, made the announcement Today on behalf of Maureen MacDonald, Minister of Health and Wellness. It is part of the province's new capital plan to make life better for families.

Skabar says the new health care centre will enhance health care in the community and will greatly improve patient access and working conditions for physicians and staff.

The outdated, two-storey hospital was built in the 1960s and is not suited for collaborative, patient-centred health care. For instance, there is no elevator, making much of the building inaccessible.

Cumberland Health Authority and Department of Health and Wellness staff will work with the community to plan the new health centre. A construction report will confirm the scope, size and cost.

Bruce Quigley, chief executive officer for the Cumberland Health Authority says it will certainly help them move their conversations forward with health-care professionals and the citizens of the Pugwash area to ensure the new model for health-care delivery meets the community's needs.

District 4 Southeast RCMP responded to a report of gunshots fired on Fort Road in Port Elgin N.B. early this morning. The investigation has shown that a firearm was discharged into a vehicle that was parked in the area. No one was in the vehicle at the time and no one was injured. The police are asking anyone who may have witnessed anything or has any information to contact District 4 RCMP at 506-533-5151 or NB Crime Stoppers at 1-800 222-TIPS (8477).

CFTA News .. Operation Christmas Kick-off ... Nov 25th

Emergency first responders from throughout Nova Scotia teamed up at the Amherst Fire Hall Thursday to kick off Operation Christmas, which encourages people to drive sober and drive safe, not only over the holidays, but for every day of the year.  Const. Dal Hutchinson of the Cumberland District RCMP welcomed municipal police agencies from throughout Nova Scotia, representatives from RCMP detachments from throughout the province, EHS, fire services, motor vehicle inspectors, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and CN police.  Operation Christmas is designed to raise awareness among the motoring public.    After the meeting at the fire hall the participants set up check points throughout Cumberland County and handed out information about Operation Christmas to commuters. 

CFTA News- Funding Announced for Schools .. Nov 23rd

Construction of a new elementary school to replace the West Highlands School in Amherst is in the provincial government’s plans for 2012.   Education Minister Ramona Jennex announced today six schools, including West Highlands Elementary, will be built in 2012-13 as part of the province’s capital program. Jennex said it is a significant investment in the young people of the province and they are putting kids and learning first by providing them with the best learning environments possible.  The government release said construction on the new $6.6-million West Highlands Elementary will begin in 2012.   The government has also allocated funds for renovations to River Hebert District High which amounts to $3 million with another 1.9 million dollars for Springhill Junior-Senior High.

CFTA News-  Oxford Building New Fire Station ... Nov 23rd

Oxford has been earmarked for a new fire station. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2013. The town is contributing $600,000 towards the cost of the four-bay station and the fire department $150,000.

CFTA News ... Heating Rebate Assistance .. Nov 23rd

Cumberland South Liberal Candidate Kenny John Jackson is urging residents to take advantage of the province’s Heating Assistance Rebate Program.

The Liberal candidate is offering his services to assist people living in Cumberland South with filling out applications for the Program.  Jackson says he wants to make sure that they know about the program and that he’s here to help them fill out the paperwork. The program offers a rebate of up to $200 for eligible applicants who heat their homes with oil, electricity, wood, propane, wood pellets, natural gas or coal. Those who qualify for the rebate are single people with an income of $27,000.00 or less and people with a household annual income of $42,000.00 or less. The deadline for applications is March 31st, 2012.

Amherst Ramblers coach Jim Bottomley has been given a vote of confidence by club management after as many as six players quit the team Sunday. Team president Jim Henwood confirmed Sunday night that he was approached by a group of players earlier in the day expressing their frustration with Bottomley, saying they were leaving the team if Bottomley remained coach. Those players later picked up their belongings at the Amherst Stadium and left the rink.Henwood would not release the names of the players who left the team.

 The case of a Cumberland County woman missing for more than a year is nearly closed after the discovery of human remains in a wooded area off Robert Angus Drive Wednesday. Police believe they've found the body of Katherine Cora McNeil, 58, who hasn't been seen since Oct. 4 of last year when she walked away from Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan. Deputy Police Chief Ian Naylor says the investigation has been completed at the scene and they have reason to believe it may possibly be the remains of Ms. McNeil. He says the reason is that certain possessions that were found at the scene and some of those were her personal identification. Naylor said an autopsy was being done in Halifax to try to determine the cause of death and to make a positive identification.

A hunter who was reported missing Wednesday night in the Baie Verte area of New Brunswick has been located. District 4 RCMP received a report of a 23-year-old man from Amherst, who had been hunting in the Baie-Verte area and not returned. Police and volunteers with Tri-County Search and Rescue searched the area throughout the night, but were unable to locate the man. This morning, the man walked out of the woods on his own, approximately two kilometres from where he had left his vehicle. RCMP report the man had become disoriented in the woods and was unable to find his way out. When he did emerge, he was cold and wet, but otherwise safe and sound. He told police he had lit a fire and waited until daylight to find his way out. The man did not require medical treatment.

Cumberland County’s three community health boards are kicking off a health awareness campaign at the Amherst Centre Mall on Saturday. Colleen Dowe, the community health boards co-ordinator for the Cumberland Health Authority says a number of health professionals, including nurse practitioners, a registered nurse and a smoking cessation counselor from Addictions Services, will be on hand at the mall offering free testing of blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and body mass index. The clinic will operate between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. She says people attending the event will be given a credit card-sized card for their wallet on which they can track those numbers. As well they will receive a pamphlet on what the numbers mean and what to look for.

Justice Minister Ross Landry says the province's courtrooms will be safer after announcing a two million dollar investment in new and upgraded security measures today. The investment in 10 courthouses, including Amherst, is part of the province's new capital plan to make life better for families.
Landry says safety and security of people is of paramount importance in the province's courtrooms and the significant investment will make courtrooms and courthouses across the province safer.
The investment includes new or replacement closed-circuit cameras, access controls, alarms and other protective measures.

A win and a loss for the Amherst Ramblers over the weekend in Maritime Junior Hockey League play. The Ramblers fell 6-4 to the Truro Bearcats in Truro last night. The Ramblers doubled the Yarmouth Mariners 6-3 Saturday night at the Amherst Stadium.

The Cumberland County Blues beat the Eastern Shore Junior Mariners 6-2 Saturday night in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League action.

The Pugwash High Panthers won the NSSAF Provincial Boys Soccer Championship on the weekend beating Ecole Du Sommet 3-1. The ARHS Vikettes lost in the Division 2 Girls championship final 4-3 to Central Kings.

The Amherst Ramblers beat the Yarmouth Mariners 6-3 in Maritime Junior Hockey League action tonight (Sat) at the Amherst Stadium.  Ben Mac Donald led the Ramblers with a pair of goals while Brandon Street, Mathieu Boudreau, Justin Matthews and Ryan Matheson notched singles.   Over 1000 fans turned out for the contest. The Ramblers are on the road Sunday to face the Truro Bearcats.

The Dieppe Commandos needed a shootout Saturday night to edge the Amherst Ramblers 2-1 in Maritime Junior Hockey League action.  Jordon Escott picked up the lone Amherst goal.  The Ramblers picked up 3 of a possible four points in weekend play.  They beat Campbellton Tigers 4-2 Friday night in Campbellton. 

CFTA News ...October 29th

The RCMP says a man has admitted to killing a New Brunswick mother and her son 16 years ago. In a news release, the Mounties say Raymond Joseph White, 65, pleaded guilty on Friday in Moncton to two counts of second-degree murder. The bodies of 37-year-old Mary Lou Barnes and her 12-year-old son Larry William Mills Jr. were found in their British Settlement home in November 1995. White was charged last year with two counts of first-degree murder. He initially pleaded not guilty to the charges and the change of plea comes after a week of voir-dire testimony into the killings. The RCMP says White is to be sentenced in Moncton provincial court on Tuesday.

The Cumberland County Blues are on a three game winning streak following a 12-4 drubbing of the Pictou County Scotians in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League play Friday night.

Soon Nova Scotians registering vehicles will receive modern redesigned licence plates produced by Waldale Manufacturing in Amherst. Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister John
MacDonell says the province's licence plates haven't changed for over 20 years and the new plates looks more modern, have improved visibility, and will help ensure Nova Scotia continues to highlight the Bluenose. Redesigned plates will be issued when the current plates have been used.

The public is advised that the emergency department at All Saints Springhill Hospital will be closed overnight on two occasions next week. These closures are necessary due to a shortage of physicians to provide coverage.

The public is reminded that registration for the emergency department will cease one hour prior to any closure. The St. FX Xmen edged the Mount Allison Mounties 42-41 in double overtime in AUS Football action Friday night at Mac Aulay Field in Sackville.   It was the Mounties final season contest.

Busy Weekend For RCMP .. Sept 20th

This past weekend was a busy one for RCMP in Cumberland County. Members of the Pugwash Detachment of the RCMP conducted a traffic check stop on Highway 6 in Pugwash Friday evening and a 44 year old male was arrested for Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
Early Saturday morning, members of the RCMP Northern Traffic Services conducted a traffic stop on Highway 302 in Nappan which resulted in the arrest of a 21 year old male. He has been charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle. On Saturday evening, members of the Amherst Detachment of the RCMP arrested three males after two vehicles were checked in Nappan and a large quantity of cannabis marihuana was seized. Police continue to investigate this matter. Oxford RCMP arrested a 38 year old male after a traffic stop late Saturday night on the Fenton Road in Collingwood. As a result, he is facing Impaired Operation charges.

Woman Faces Charges For Disturbance .. Sept 20

A woman was arrested and jailed Saturday night following a disturbance on Havelock Street. The 19-year-old is facing several charges including possession of a weapon. She was scheduled to appear Monday in Amherst provincial court. Also on Saturday, Amherst police received two complaints regarding open fires within town limits; three noise complaints – Laplanche, Willow and Church streets; two reports of possible impaired drivers and a complaint about fireworks being set off. In total Amherst police responded to 33 complaints between Friday and Sunday

Sports-Mounties Suffer Loss to Gaiters (Sept 17th)

The Mount Allison Mounties fell 36-23 in CIS football action at MacAulay Field on Saturday before an announced Homecoming crowd of 2,659.  The Mounties once again showed flashes of great promise and engineered a fourth quarter comeback but in the end, the visiting Gaiters came out on top. The Amherst Ramblers edged the Truro Bearcats 4-3 in a shootout Saturday night in Maritime Junior A Hockey League exhibition play in Amherst.  Jordan Escott led the Ramblers with 1 goal and 1 assist while Dylan McGuigan led the Bearcats with 1 goal and 1 assist also.  Sunday evening, Truro beat Amherst 4-1.

The new Northport Bridge on Route 366 in Cumberland County is finally open to all traffic. The new bridge, which cost five-point-six million dollars, replaces a 50-year-old bridge that was limited to loads of 20-thousand tonnes or less. The new bridge is able to carry all legal highway loads. The bridge was originally scheduled to open in January. Bill Estabrooks, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal says completion of the new bridge has taken longer than expected and they appreciate the patience of area residents. Department officials will be meeting to determine the amount of damages that will be assessed against the contractor because of the delay.
