Tantramar Community Radio Ready to Break Ground At Tower and Transmitter Site

August 16 2010  AMHERST – The Tantramar Community Radio Society is finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel in its plans for an FM radio station.   After many months of delays, the Society is ready to break ground at its tower location off the Fenwick Road.

The Society has acquired a transmitter building which will be moved to the site within the next month.   Society Co-Chair Randy Smith says the footings will be put in place and an electrician will be doing the necessary wiring and power hook-up.  The site will also be prepared for the tower erection.  He said so far upwards of $75,000 in donations and in kind services have been invested in the project.

The Society entered into a land lease agreement for the parcel of land which is owned jointly by the Municipality of Cumberland and the Towns of Amherst and Springhill.  It is part of an area designated several years ago as a proposed airport site.

Fund raising campaign chair Shelagh Rayworth said they are excited to be finally moving forward.  “While you might not have heard much from us publicly over the past several months, we have had a very active campaign team and corps of volunteers working behind the scenes on this.”

She said the Society continues with its fundraising efforts approaching various levels of government, organizations and the business community.    The Municipality of Cumberland has committed a $30,000 conditional grant to the project.   The province, through Economic and Rural Development,  has also provided the Society with a $20,000 grant.

Rayworth said one of their unique fund raising activities for the Fall will be a land auction.  Toney Bay Developments has donated a piece of property in the Pugwash area to the organization which will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.  Details on the auction will be announced at a later date.

Besides providing an eclectic mix of music, entertainment and news, Smith said the community station will provide an outlet for creative expression and diversity in opinion. It will also provide an outlet for local performers and part of its focus will be Maritime music.

The Tantramar Community Radio Society was given the green light in June 2009 by the CRTC to set up an FM community radio station. The licence gave the society two years to get on the air at the 107.9 frequency.
